5. Co-Premises

Lesson 5 Learning Objectives:

  • Identify when premises work together to provide a single reason to believe a claim.
  • Visually represent co-premises and distinguish them from independent and sub-premises.
  • Expose missing or implicit co-premises.
  • Articulate the reasoning that connects a piece of evidence to the claim it supports.

In the argument types you have learned about so far, each premise acts independently to support another claim (the main claim or another premise). But premises can also “hold hands” to work together, which leads us to the very important concept of the co-premise.
